The fish slapping dance is a British tradition reaching back many, many years. The dance is nearly always carried out near water to allow a safe landing after the big finale, although some claim that a reasonably deep hole can work just as well. The more extreme fish slappers believe that a vat of custard should be used for maximum effect.
The dance was on the verge of dying out and many feared the tradition would be lost, until it was filmed for a documentary by the renowned filmmaker Monty Python. The popularity of this footage reinvigorated the practice, and it has been on the increase across Britain ever since.
